Cal Shake roof material

A popular roof material that was used in the late 1980s, turned out to be very problematic. Cal Shake was the manufacturer. This cement shingle, in most cases, turned out to be a bad product. The material was very brittle.

I never walk on the stuff when inspecting a roof and I suggest that no one else does unless they are a licensed roofing contractor.

If a house such as the one in the photo ever had to be tented for termites, I can guarantee that damage to a much of this lightweight material would occur. A termite company would have you sign a waiver releasing them from any roof material damage – because they know it too. About 75% of the shingles on the dwelling in this picture were already damaged.

  1. Just as well this type of shingle is not used any more. Roofing material has come a long way since this. This roof with all the damage must be leaking. I would not be happy walking on it.

  2. Our Cal Shake roof was installed in 1994 and has since left us with many broken or missing tiles. From your website, I cannot tell exactly what services you offer regarding repair or replacement of Cal Shake tiles. We have an immediate need to replace the ridge line tiles since we are replacing the rear rolled asphalt roof.
What can you offer us vis-a-vis help/repair for the entire roof as well as replacement material for the ridge line?
